The answer to your question is posted back in the forum by Padraic Edwards. He just uses standard XPages Notes URLs. Hope that solves your problem.

As for other comments above, in particular with regard to XPiNC not being usable in 8.5.2, this is simply not the case. Yes, there was an issue with application load time for remote applications and this was addressed in 8.5.3, but this problem does not impact all types of XPiNC applications.

As you remember, we invested some time with you in February analyzing a non-performant XPiNC sample app you sent us, and the two main problems there were remedied by simple modifications to the application design.

Best wishes of the season,

-Martin

Congratulations Sean, it's certainly well-deserved. You've not been afraid to speak honestly about performance issues with XPages in the Notes Client, and I think your viewpoint justifies your value as an IBM Champion. The criticism was not as a reason for not using XPiNC, but a call to arms to improve XPiNC in order to envigorate the use of the Client for XPages. I'm sure you were not the only voice making this call, but I'm sure you have had involvement in ensuring 8.5.3 has improved performance. I hope future releases build on that work too, as I believe they will.

social is just the new word for collaboration

<dc:subject>I am very honoured to be an IBM Champion</dc:subject>

Just as "Cloud" is the current buzz word for hosted apps, which have been around in some form for eons (I suppose in the mainframe days, it was all cloud), I agree that "Social" just means "collaboration", but has become the trendier term for the same concept due to the success of social networks as varied as Facebook and LinkedIn.

I was joking at work the other day that "becoming a 'social business' just means two things: more effective internal engagement, and more effective external engagement. That's it. Why are people writing 300-page books about this?" I suppose the answer, of course, is that so many businesses have tried and failed to become more effective in their collaboration because they either don't have the right tools or aren't using them in a way that fits their business model and target audience (i.e. customers / supply chain, etc.).

In some ways, the organic collaboration facilitated by some of these popular social networks does provide a useful model for businesses to follow: make it easy to find the right people, easy to create content, and easy to filter content created by others such that only what's important to me floats to the surface. None of this matters, however, if the underlying culture of a business continues to cling to the old model of trickle-down vision instead of trickle-up empowerment... if I have to be a VP or higher for my ideas to turn into a revenue opportunity, no tool can ever prevent the business from stagnating.

Some of the reticence toward "social" reminds me of my past experiences with corporate stigma toward instant messaging. One employer outright banned any form of instant messaging - including Sametime - having written it off as "social". They viewed it as a distraction from "real work", something only used by teenagers to tell each other "like, omg, i cant believe my dad grounded me", not as the highly effective collaboration tool it can be. I suspect that it's difficult for the average CEO to distinguish between how his daughter uses Facebook and how his employees would use Connections, or how Miley Cyrus uses Twitter vs. how his customer support organization could use the same tool to engage customers who are publicly bashing his brand and convert those critics back into satisfied and loyal customers.

With all that said, however, I also agree that XPages fill the gaping hole left by these tools that have a much narrower focus. Connections is a fantastic bit of kit, but it's still just blogs, wikis, and the like. How does a company's custom supply chain management application fit into that container? That's a perfect fit for XPages. Sure, it's a "social" app - the very process it streamlines is guaranteed to require external engagement (and, almost certainly, internal) - but you're not going to use a wiki to store a list of your approved vendors, with documentation of the audits performed to verify each, and so forth. Sure, Activities might be leveraged to create a reusable process for vendor approval, but in almost all cases, a business is going to want a custom app for this sort of thing. And, just as has always been true for Notes, the scope of the apps that can be created in short order with XPages dwarfs any other development platform I've yet seen... including traditional Notes apps.
